uva-logo-new2The No. 5 Virginia field hockey team (10-2, 3-2 ACC) earned a 2-1 victory over No. 7 Wake Forest (10-3, 3-1 ACC) on Friday (Oct. 9) in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Freshmen Greta Ell (Plains, Pa.) and Izzy McDonough (Kennett Square, Pa.) scored the Cavaliers’ goals with sophomore Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) logging an assist.

“This was a very good win for us tonight,” said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. “I was very impressed with the back four and their ability to adhere to the game plan and get the ball moving forward. The whole team really fought for momentum and pressured the areas of the field we really needed to pressure.”

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) got the start and earned the win, improving to 4-0 this season. Junior goalie Rebecca Holden (Cherry Creek, N.J.) played the second half, making five saves without allowing a goal.

Wake Forest struck first, scoring on its first shot of the game, which came after a penalty corner 12:39 into the game. Ell tied the contest two minutes later after Vittese dribbled into the circle and found a wide-open Ell at the corner of the net. McDonough scored the game winner 21:21 into the game, bouncing a shot past the Wake keeper to give UVA a 2-1 lead.

Virginia outshot Wake 8-5 in the first half, but in the second half, the Demon Deacons had an 8-5 shot advantage.

Virginia closes out the weekend playing at No. 15 Old Dominion (7-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
