uva field hockeyThe No. 11 UVA field hockey team (2-3, 0-1 ACC) fell 3-2 at No. 2 Duke (5-0, 1-0 ACC) on Friday (Sept. 9) at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Virginia scored the first goal of the game when senior Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England) smashed a second-chance shot into the net at 8:40 into the game. Duke tied the game, 1-1, by scoring off a penalty corner with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Blue Devils took their first lead by scoring a second goal off a penalty corner 10 minutes into the second half and then increased their lead to 3-1 three minutes later. Junior Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) cut UVA’s deficit in half by scoring off a penalty corner with 20 minutes remaining, with neither team able to convert their chances the remainder of the game.

“It was a hard-fought game and a typical ACC match-up with both teams having a lot of scoring opportunities,” said Virginia head coach Michele Madison. “Duke was able to find the exits on the quick counter. We need to be able to shut that down, which is something we are going to need to work on.”

Duke took 20 shots in the game, with half of those coming off its 10 penalty corners. Virginia had three penalty corners and took eight shots.

Virginia sophomore goalkeeper Carrera Lucas (Brooklandville, Md.) made a career-high 10 saves while Duke’s Sammi Steele made two saves. Freshman Dominique van Slooten (Laren, Netherlands) logged the first defensive save of her collegiate career.

In addition to scoring her first goal of the season, Hyams was also credited with her fourth assist of the year. Junior Nadine de Koning (Laren, Netherlands) also logged an assist.

Virginia returns home to host Liberty on Monday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. Admission is free for all of Virginia’s regular-season home field hockey games. Live stats will be available through a Gametracker link on VirginiaSports.com.
