emu sportsEMU opened ODAC play Saturday with a thorough domination of Sweet Briar on the road, picking up a 6-0 win. EMU’s soccer women snap their only losing skid of the season with the decision, improving to 4-3-1 overall.

Next up is a tall task at Shenandoah on Wednesday evening. The Hornets were picked No. 3 in the ODAC Preseason Poll.

Eastern Mennonite started quickly against SBC, earning a corner kick just 37 seconds in. They never let up.

In the 10th minute, Bailey McInnis (Henrico, Va./Mills E. Goodwin) pushed up the right side and drew out the Vixens’ keeper. She then sent a cross to Ariel Barbosa (Baltimore, Md./Towson) for an easy tap in. Just two minutes later, McInnis again broke free on the right wing, this time rocketing in her own shot into the upper 90 for a 2-0 lead.

The Royals got their third of the half a mere 17 seconds before intermission, when Logann Braun (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) headed in a free kick from Sophia Hartman (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg).

The women matched their output in the second stanza, once again starting early. Moments after a corner kick, Hannah Walker(Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) drove in a 20-yarder to make it 4-0 only 1:01 into the half. Freshman Laura Rittenhouse(Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) took a nice through ball from Emily Hostetler (Marshallville, Ohio/Smithville) in the 56th minute for her fifth goal of the year.

With just under five minutes to play, Rachel Sturm (Denton, Md./North Caroline) broke loose inside. Her first attempt was blocked by a defender, but Sturm grabbed the carom and stuck it in from 12 yards out.

Eastern Mennonite had a sound 37-2 advantage in shots, including 18-1 on goal. Emily Young (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) had the only EMU save, as she and Leah Wenger (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) again split time in goal.
