Donald Trump: Ideological tests for new immigrants

donald trumpProspective new immigrants would have to pass an ideological test for admission to the United States under a proposal being floated by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

The ideological tests, to be introduced Monday in a speech outlining foreign-policy initiatives from the presidential contender, would assess prospective immigrants’ stances on religious freedom, gender equality, gay rights and other social and political issues.

Applicants would also be vetted to gauge their support of American values like tolerance and pluralism through questionnaires, analysis of their activity on social media and interviews with friends and family.

Visas would not be issued in any case where it cannot perform adequate screenings.

The thrust of these tests would seem to be aimed at a familiar Trump target, Muslims, and indeed Trump surrogates offering spoilers on the content of the speech on foreign policy indicated that Trump will emphasize that the U.S. is at war with “radical Islam.”

Critics of Trump have taken to social media with the early advance on the speech to question cynically how many domestic supporters of Trump would be able to pass the ideological tests being proposed by the candidate.
