Diabetes Educator Visited East Rockingham Senior Center

Contributors

ersc-diabetesJulie Pierantoni, RN, MSN, CDE, Diabetes Education Coordinator with RMH, spoke to 19 East Rockingham Senior Center members and two volunteers on July 22 about “Managing Diabetes.”

Pierantoni has visited ERSC on multiple occasions, and she always provides a vast amount of information on this topic. This visit was no different, as she discussed the new Medicare regulations pertaining to diabetic supplies, what the blood of a person is like with diabetes (syrupy), the best time to take blood sugars, the affects of diabetes on an individual, and that persons with diabetes can make the best of their visits to the doctor. She also offered multiple handouts with information on this topic.

After Pierantoni’s 30-minute discussion, she offered attendees a chance to have their glucose levels checked, and a total of 19 members, volunteers and employees were eager to complete the survey indicating their risks for diabetes and have their fingers pricked for this blood test. This was done in an orderly and high confidential manner and allowed Mrs. Pierantoni the chance to offer advice for those who are diabetics or those who had questions regarding this screening process. All total, Mrs. Pierantoni offered nearly two hours of her professional time! Staff and members were pleased that she was able to stay for lunch, as a token of appreciation.

She is eager to visit other HR Senior Centers, and her contact information has been shared. For questions, contact Pierantoni at 540-689-1182 at RMH Sentara.
