Democrats uniting behind Sam Rasoul in Roanoke House race

In the first moments after Sam Rasoul’s upset win in the 11th House District Democratic primary, one of his opponents talked to a reporter about possibly making a run in the general election an independent, and the Democratic mayor of Roanoke raised the specter of dirty tricks, without being able to point to anything specific.

Sam-RasoulBut that was two days ago. On Monday, the Rasoul campaign announced a unity event featuring Rasoul and City Councilman David Trinkle, who issued a statement backing the Rasoul campaign in the upcoming Jan. 7 special election to fill the seat left open by the retirement of Del. Onzlee Ware.

“Sam Rasoul has been chosen to represent the Democrats in this race, and I support his candidacy. I ask that my supporters do the same,” said Trinkle, who had floated the idea of making a run at the seat as an independent.

“I intend to eagerly help Sam prepare for the challenge ahead of him and will offer my expertise and knowledge whenever appropriate so he may serve as a strong voice for the Star City and Roanoke region in Richmond. It is critical that we all work together as a team to ensure his success in the special election on Jan. 7, 2014,” Trinkle said.

The unity event will be held at Fork in the City, 551 Marshall Ave. SW, Roanoke, at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The two other candidates in the Democratic nomination race, Roanoke Vice Mayor Court Rosen and Patricia White-Boyd, have been invited to the event.

“It is wonderful to see all of us coming together and uniting after such an exciting primary,” Rasoul said. “I am humbled that the people choose me to be their nominee and I want to thank all the other candidates again, for running good campaigns focused on positive politics.”
