Culpeper District Traffic Alerts for Nov. 21-Dec. 2

vdot-logoThe following highway work is scheduled, weather permitting, in the Culpeper District during the upcoming week. Traffic movements may be restricted and speed limits reduced in work zones. (NEW) or (UPDATE) indicate revisions since last week’s report.

VDOT will suspend most highway work zones for several days during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period to provide as many travel lanes as possible. Lane closures will be lifted on interstates and other major roads from noon Friday, Nov. 23 to noon Monday, Nov. 28. For more information, see the news release.

Rio Road grade-separated intersection – Motorists should follow overhead and ground-mounted signs to guide them through the project area. Sunday through Friday the following overnight lane closures will be in effect.

On Route 29 north and south of the Rio Road intersection:

  • Between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Friday, there will be at least one lane open both northbound and southbound
  • All business entrances will remain open during business hours
  • Turning movements at the Rio Road signal, including left turns and U-turns, may be restricted between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

On Rio Road east and west of Route 29:

  • Between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m., the crossover, U-turn and left-turn movements from Rio Road onto Route 29 and from Route 29 onto Rio Road may be restricted
  • All business entrances will remain open during business hours

During the overnight closures additional detour signs, cones and other traffic controls will direct motorists through the work zone. The speed limit remains 35 mph at all times. The nighttime work will continue for the next several months.

(UPDATE) Route 29 widening – Northbound traffic is on a new alignment between Route 643 (Polo Grounds Road) and Route 1719 (Towncenter Drive). Motorists should be alert for signs and other traffic controls to direct them through the work zone. This lane shift will allow reconstruction of the existing northbound lanes and multi-use path just east of the roadway.

Travel lanes are narrowed and shoulders are closed within the work zone and the speed limit is reduced to 40 mph. Expect intermittent single lane closures Monday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Motorists should remain alert and use caution through the work zone.

Berkmar Drive Extended – Bridge construction may require brief, intermittent closures of Rio Mills Road between Route 29 and Millers Cottage Lane while materials are delivered. On Towncenter Drive in the vicinity of the roundabout, motorists should be alert for dump trucks and other equipment entering and exiting the roadway.

Hillsdale Drive Extended – Obey traffic controls and expect minor delays on Hillsdale Drive, Hydraulic Road, India Road, Zan Road, Greenbrier Drive, Pepsi Place and Seminole Court. For project updates, visithttp://hillsdaledrive.org.

 

Albemarle County

Interstate 64 – Installation of infrastructure and devices for active traffic management system on Afton Mountain. Shoulder closures in both directions between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday from mile marker 107 (Crozet exit) to mile marker 94 in Augusta County. Motorists should use caution approaching the work zone.

(NEW) Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway) – Pipe replacement at Route 729 (Milton Road). Nov. 29-Dec. 1from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.

(NEW) Frontage Route 179 (Hansens Mountain Road) – Mobile tree trimming operations from Route 1090 (Lego Drive) to the dead end. Nov. 21 and Nov. 22 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane.

(NEW) Route 631 (Rio Road) – Mobile pothole patching operations in both directions from Charlottesville City limits to Route 1481 (Pen Park Lane). Nov. 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., expect lane closures controlled by flagging.

 

Culpeper County

(UPDATE) Route 3 (Germanna Highway) – Roadway widening to four lanes from Stevensburg to Lignum. Nov. 21-22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 23 from 9 a.m. to noon and Nov. 28-Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., stay alert for intermittent lane closures from 0.9 mile west of Route 663 (Stevensburg Road.) to Route 669 (Carrico Mills Road). Traffic will be controlled by flagging. Speed limit reduced to 45 mph in the work zone. Motorists shouldbe alert for workers near the travel lanes and for trucks entering and exiting the highway.

Route 29 (James Madison Highway) – Construction of new interchange at Route 666 (Braggs Corner Road). Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., intermittent lane closures will occur on Route 29 and Route 666. Speed limit reduced to 35 mph on Route 666 and to 50 mph on Route 29 through the work zone. Anticipated completion August 2017.

(UPDATE) Route 29 (James Monroe Highway) – Constructing restricted crossing U-turn intersection at Route 718 (Mountain Run Lake Road). The median crossover is closed at Route 718, restricting all left-turn movements at the intersection. Motorists detoured via Route 1250 (Granite Boulevard). Nov. 28-Dec. 2 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., single lane closures will be in place in both directions between Route 29 Business (Madison Road) and Route 1250. Motorists should use caution traveling through the work zone and obey traffic controls. Anticipated completion January 2017.

(UPDATE) Route 229 (North Main Street) – Roadway widening to four lanes. Nov. 21-22 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 23 from 7 a.m. to noon and Nov. 28-Dec. 2 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., occasional lane closures with flagging will occur through the work zone. Stay alert for workers near the travel lanes and for trucks entering and exiting the highway. Anticipated completion August 2017.

(UPDATE) Route 522 (Sperryville Pike) – Roadway widening in association with the Route 784 (Western Outer Loop/Ira Hoffman Lane) project. Nov. 21-22 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 23 from 7 a.m. to noon and Nov. 28- Dec. 2 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., occasional lane closures with flagging will occur from Route 641 (Gibson Mill Road) to Route 763 (Saint Jameson Road).

Route 685 (Fleetwood Heights Road) – Rehabilitating bridge over Flat Run. Road closed to through traffic. Drivers west of the bridge should use Route 663 (Alanthus Road) to Route 15/29 (James Madison Highway) and turn left on Route 676 (Beverley Ford Road), which carries traffic back to Route 685. Motorists on the east side of the bridge should reverse the detour. Driveway access will be maintained for local traffic. Anticipated completion Dec. 23.

 

Fauquier County

(UPDATE) Interstate 66 – Mowing operations in both directions between mile markers 14 and 37. Nov. 21-22from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Nov. 28-Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., intermittent lane closures are possible while equipment navigates across bridges and around guardrail.

(NEW) Route 17 (Marsh Road) – Mowing operations in both directions from Fauquier County line to Interstate 66. Expect intermittent lane closures Nov. 21-22 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Nov. 23 from 7 a.m. to noon and Nov. 28-Dec. 2 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Route 245 (Old Tavern Road) – Rehabilitating bridge over Broad Run. A temporary traffic signal is in place to control two-way traffic through the work zone. Motorists should obey traffic controls and use caution traveling through the work zone. Anticipated completion April 2017.

(NEW) Route 710 (Rectortown Road) – Railroad company performing paving operations at crossing 0.4 mile north of Route 1008 (Mountain View Avenue). Nov. 22 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.

 

Fluvanna County

(UPDATE) Route 15 (James Madison Highway) – Construction of roundabout at Route 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway). Nov. 21-22 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Nov. 23 from 7 a.m. to noon, and Nov. 28-Dec. 2 from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., motorists can expect intermittent lane closures controlled by flagging. Anticipated completion August 2017.

 

Louisa County

Route 33 (Jefferson Highway) – Utility company performing communications cable work from Route 767 (School Bus Road) to the Hanover County line. Shoulder closures and intermittent lane closures with flagging. Use caution when traveling near the work zone.

Route 609 (Buckner Road) – Rehabilitating bridge over Long Creek. Route 609 closed to through traffic. Southbound motorists will be detoured west on Route 612 (Halls Store Road) to Route 33 (Jefferson Highway), and then east on Route 648 (Jouett School Road), which carries traffic back to Route 609. Northbound traffic will reverse the detour. Anticipated completion Dec. 2.

 

Madison County

Route 230 (Wolftown-Hood Road) – Rehabilitating the bridge over the Conway River.  A temporary traffic signal is in place to control two-way traffic through the work zone. Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., expect lane closures in both directions between the Greene County line and Route 666 (Pea Ridge Road). Motorists should obey traffic controls, use caution traveling through the work zone and expect minor delays. Anticipated completion November 2017.

 

Orange County

(NEW) Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Westbound tree trimming operations just past Route 646 (Lovers Lane). Nov. 21-22 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.

(NEW) Route 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway) – Paving operations in both directions from Route 663 (True Blue Road) to Orange County line. Nov. 20-22 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane.

(NEW) Route 633 (Spicers Mill Road) – Pipe replacement between Route 616 (Montford Road) and Route 635 (Jones Mill Road). Nov. 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.

(NEW) Route 639 (Chicken Mountain Road) – Pipe replacement between Route 15 (James Madison Highway) and Route 655 (Jacksontown Road). Nov. 30-Dec. 1 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.

(NEW) Route 643 (Cox Mill Road) – Pipe replacement between Route 638 (Mountain Track Road) and Route 639 (Mallorys Ford Road). Nov. 29 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., traffic reduced to one lane controlled by flagging.
