Corbin Lucas: Local kid doing well in rookie VBL season

13-Corbin-LucasWaynesboro Generals outfielder Corbin Lucas (sophomore, Shenandoah U.) thought the ball might be foul when he saw it heading toward the left-field corner.

“Somebody told me it hit off the foul pole. It felt pretty great. It was pretty cool,” said Lucas, a local talent (Fort Defiance High School) in his first season in the Valley League, who hit his first VBL homer Wednesday night in the second inning of Waynesboro’s 5-4 win over Rockbridge.

Lucas had a solid sophomore season at Shenandoah, hitting .370 with three homers, 35 RBI and seven stolen bases.

The biggest adjustment to playing in the Valley: “I really hadn’t seen this many good changeups. But now I’m starting to see the ball a little bit better.”

For the local boy who grew up in Grottoes following the VBL, just getting a chance to play in the league is a dream come true.

“I understand the impact that Valley League baseball has in this area,” Lucas said. “Finally getting out there and getting a chance to play and represent a person from the area, it means a lot. I want this team to be very successful because it represents me and where I’m from.”
