Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash Thursday night that claimed the life of a Charlottesville man.

Trooper T.M. Skehan responded to the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 just east of Exit 120 in Albemarle County for a single-vehicle crash. Virginia State Police were notified of the incident at approximately 9:04 p.m.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 1994 Cadillac Sedan DeVille was traveling eastbound on I-64 when the vehicle ran off the road and into the median. The car proceeded to travel across both westbound lanes of the interstate, struck an embankment and eventually came to rest on the driver’s side door. The car also caught fire.

The driver, Trevis H. Johnson, 28, of Charlottesville, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Speed is not a factor in the crash and it is undetermined if alcohol was a factor.

The crash remains under investigation.
