emu sportsThe EMU women never covered from a cold start Wednesday evening in the nation’s capital, suffering a 78-42 loss at Catholic University of America. The powerful Cardinals (5-0) had been receiving votes in the most recent D3hoops.com national poll.

Eastern Mennonite (1-3) returns home this Saturday, hosting Ferrum College at 2:00pm. Five of the next six games are in Yoder Arena, including ODAC-rival Roanoke next Tuesday and Trinity (DC) next Saturday.

The Royals won the opening tip from Catholic but turned the ball over on their first possession. The trend continued, as the women shot 0-3 with six turnovers to start the game, falling in a 14-0 hole. Myneshia Walker (Freeman, Va./Brunswick) hit a three at the end of the first period, leaving the deficit at 23-12, but giving the women a little momentum.

Chloe Roach (Leesburg, Va./Tuscarora) and Jonae Guest (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) combined for an 8-2 run to start the second, with Guest’s bucket at the 6:54 mark cutting the margin to 25-20. The Cardinals responded with a three pointer, however, and eventually pushed the lead back into double figures by halftime, 42-30.

Roach gave the Royals the first points of the third period, but the women wouldn’t score for another seven minutes as the game got out of hand. Catholic dominated the second half, 36-12, to run away to the decision.

The cold shooting was across the board, as EMU finished at 29.8% from the floor, 17.6% from outside, and even 33.3% from the free throw line. Catholic shot 43.8% including 10-24 from three-point range.

Roach was the most effective weapon for the Royals, finishing with 15 points, five steals and three assists. Jess Washington(Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) ripped down a game high 11 rebounds off the bench. Guest charted six points and five rebounds. Walker added six boards.

Michelle DeSantis led Catholic with 21 points and six assists.
