Shenandoah Valley Art Center Schedule: June 2012
The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of June, is exhibiting the works of SVAC member artists, in an exhibition judged by Jessica Martinkosky, Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Blue Ridge Community College. The art center is proud that it is a community based organization that loves to showcase and support its talented members in this annual exhibition. The collection of artwork will feature the artists’ best efforts in a variety of media. An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held Thursday, June 7, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come and meet the artists. Read more
Waynesboro Public Library Event Schedule: June 2012
Children’s Summer Reading Program – Registration begins June 1st. “Dream Big, Read Big” at your library. This program is open to children and young adults of all ages and reading abilities. The store is back and full of books. Earn weekly prizes and library dollars by reading and spend those dollars in the library store. Participants earn one dollar per picture book or one dollar for every ten pages of a chapter book, once the book is checked in. You must be present at check-in to receive the dollars. Dr. Robert Thompson joins Augusta Health Care for Women
Augusta Health Care for Women is pleased to announce the addition of Robert Thompson, MD FACOG FACS to their healthcare team. Dr. Thompson will be providing full scope Obstetrical and Gynecological care at both their Fishersville and Lexington locations.
Dr. Thompson is a graduate of Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and has been in practice since 1988. His special interest include: High Risk Pregnancy, First trimester Screening, Obstetrical Ultrasound and Gynecologic Surgery. Read more

Rogers named Class of 2012 valedictorian
Derek Rogers arrived at Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro in 2009 as a high-school sophomore in need of some direction.
“My attitude and my grades were horrible,” said Rogers, a native of Richmond who is leaving Fishburne this weekend as the Class of 2012 valedictorian.
The focus and discipline that is the focus of life at Fishburne, a 130-cadet all-boys private school founded in 1879, were keys to Rogers’ eventual success.
And that success, as it came in the classroom and on the drill field, started to feed on itself. Read more
Chandler Bryant: A Summer School Success Story
Chandler Bryant was struggling through his freshman year in high school in Virginia Beach when his parents came to him with an idea.

“My grades were slipping a little bit, and my parents decided, Hey, how about we just send you here? It would be a good place, a good experience. So I was, like, alright. I was on the bandwagon,” said Bryant, who had such a good experience with the five-week summer-school session last summer that he decided to stay on at Fishburne for his sophomore year. Read more
ACEA offers $3,500 in college scholarships
On Tuesday, May 15 the Augusta County Education Association, in partnership with Augusta County Public Schools, honored those retiring from the Augusta County Public Schools. As the veterans were being honored they also had the opportunity to meet the two recipients of the ACEA Scholarships.
Tori Hildebrand graduating from Buffalo Gap High School will attend Bridgewater College to study education. Ms. Hildebrand received $1,000 from the ACEA to support her education. The Future Educator Scholarship has been a part of the ACEA legacy for over 20 years. The ACEA feels that it’s very important to support those students who hope to follow in their footsteps. Members contribute to the scholarship campaign and school employees support the efforts as well. Read more
