ASC begins production of Winter’s Tale

This spring season, the American Shakespeare Center presents a play that has surprised and delighted audiences for 400 years.

One of Shakespeare’s later plays, The Winter’s Tale straddles the line of Shakespearean genre.  Directed by ASC Artistic Director Jim Warren, The Winter’s Tale takes the audience through a tragic, dark turn of events in the first act including jealously, imprisonment, death and one dangerous bear.  After the interlude, the audience is led quickly into the wonderful world of Bohemia, complete with foolery, dancing, singing and, most of all, love.  The finale of this roller-coaster ride from tragedy to comedy is full of beauty and redemption, and will leave the audience believing in miracles. Railroad work to cause road closures

Portions of Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) in Augusta County and Route 340 (Eastside Highway) in Rockingham County will be closed for railroad work.

On Route 262, near the Route 11 intersection, the Shenandoah Valley Railroad will be doing work at this crossing from June 2 at 7 a.m. to June 3 at 8 p.m. This location on Route 262 is 1.5 miles west of Interstate 81 exit 225. Route 262 will be closed at this location during this time period.  Read more

Community Foundation announces upcoming grants

The Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge will announce $175,000  in competitive community grants to 25 organizations serving the cities of Staunton and Waynesboro, and the counties of Augusta and Nelson at an event on Thursday, May 31.

The ceremony will be attended by the organizations receiving funding, past and present Community Foundation board members, and several fund partners. Read more

Augusta Health earns Chest Pain Center Accreditation

Augusta Health has received Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers, an international not-for-profit organization that focuses on transforming cardiovascular care by assisting facilities in their effort to create communities of excellence that bring together quality, cost and patient satisfaction.

“In order to meet the Chest Pain Center Accreditation requirements, Augusta Health had to meet eight areas of expertise in the care of the cardiac patient.  These areas include:  the relationship with Emergency Medical Services, timely diagnosis and treatment of patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome, a process improvement program, training and competency of personnel, organizational commitment to providing a high level of cardiac care, facility design and community outreach,” said Donna Hurst, RN, BSN, Chest Pain Center Coordinator at Augusta Health.  “The accreditation shows we are fully dedicated to the care of cardiac patients in our communities.” Read more

Stamp Out Hunger collects 170K pounds of food

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank received more than 170,000 pounds of food during Stamp Out Hunger on May 12. That will provide more than 144,000 meals to families in the Blue Ridge region during the first few weeks of summer.

Now in its 20th year, Stamp Out Hunger is one of the Food Bank’s most important food drives of the year, as it helps stock the shelves before the summer slump. While hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation, food and financial donations plummet dramatically between June and September. Stamp Out Hunger provides a much-needed boost. Read more
