UVa. baseball opens ACC Tournament on Thursday

The Virginia baseball team has earned the fourth seed in the upcoming ACC Baseball Championship and will begin tournament play at 11 a.m. Thursday against Clemson.

The tournament runs Wednesday through Sunday (May 23-27) at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C.

Virginia is joined in Division A by No. 1 seed Florida State (43-12, 24-6), No. 5 Clemson (32-24, 16-14) and No. 8 Georgia Tech (33-24, 12-18). Virginia will play Georgia Tech at 11 a.m. Friday and Florida State at 3 p.m. Saturday. Read more

Minor League Roundup: P-Nats rally, Hillcats drop fourth straight, Akron pounds Richmond

P-Nats rally for W The Potomac Nationals scored two runs in the ninth off against the Carolina Mudcats in a 6-5 comeback win at on a Saturday night at the Pfitz.  Kevin Keyes hit a sac fly scoring Zach Walters to send home the crowd of 6,101 fans home happy.

Down 6-5 against Carolina closer Jose Flores who has gone seven-for-seven in save attempts this year, the P-Nats got a lead off walk from Ricky Hague.  Walters drew a walk as well to put runners at first and second with one out.  Michael Taylor hit a soft single into shallow left center that easily scored Hague to tie the ballgame 5-5.  The throw home from Anthony Gallas ended up wide of the plate and allowed Walters to advance to third with one out on the error.  That would be important as on a 2-2 pitch Keyes hit a fly ball to medium centerfield that scored Walters and ended the contest with the Nationals winning 6-5. Maryland rallies in ninth to knock off #19 UVa.

Jordan Hagel doubled home Aflredo Rodriguez with two outs in the ninth inning to rally Maryland to a 6-5 win over the No. 19 Virginia baseball team Saturday at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium in College Park, Md. The Terrapins scored twice in the ninth to come back for the win and avoid a series sweep, just after UVa had broken a 4-4 tie in the top of the ninth.

Virginia finished the regular season with a 36-16-1 record, including an 18-12 mark in the ACC. The Cavaliers have clinched the No. 4 seed at the upcoming ACC Baseball Championship, which is slated for May 23-27 in Greensboro, N.C. Read more

Towson completes sweep of JMU

Second baseman Pat Fitzgerald’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th lifted Towson to a 5-4 win over James Madison to complete a Colonial Athletic Association baseball sweep on Saturday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park.

TU improved to 26-29 overall and clinched the final available spot in the six-team CAA Championship with a 15-15 league mark.  JMU finished the season with six straight losses to fall to 16-35-2 overall and 10-20 in the CAA for a 10th-place standing.  It was Towson’s first three-game sweep of JMU since 1992. Salem loses pitchers’ duel with Keys

Keith Couch was very, very good, but Trent Howard was even better on Saturday night, shutting down the Sox for six shutout innings in Frederick’s 1-0 win over Salem at LewisGale Field.

Howard scattered one hit and two walks, retiring the final 11 batters he faced over six innings in his second ever Carolina League start. Two Keys relievers pitched in and out of trouble, navigating through Salem opportunities as the Sox came up empty with runners in scoring position in the seventh and eighth frames. Couch permitted just four hits in six phenomenal innings, but one big swing from Aaron Baker provided all the offense Frederick needed in acquiring its fourth shutout win of the season. #19 UVa. rallies with eight in ninth for 10-3 win

The No. 19 Virginia baseball team scored eight runs in the ninth inning to come from behind and pull out a 10-3 victory at Maryland Friday night at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium in College Park, Md. The Cavaliers trailed 3-0 and had just one hit in the seventh inning before storming back for the win, which was punctuated by a Chris Taylor (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) grand slam in the ninth to blow the game open.

In clinching their fourth straight ACC series win, Virginia (36-15-1, 18-11 ACC) won its ninth straight contest against Maryland (31-24, 9-20) and captured its 15th consecutive victory in College Park against the Terrapins, dating to the 2002 season. The Cavaliers also locked themselves into the No. 4 seed at the upcoming ACC Baseball Championship, set for May 23-27 in Greensboro, N.C. Read more

Towson outslugs JMU, 11-10

Towson scored eight unanswered runs during the middle innings and held on in the end to defeat James Madison 11-10 in the second game of a Colonial Athletic Association baseball series on Friday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park.

Towson improved to 25-29 overall and, at 14-15, put itself in better position to claim the final available spot in next week’s six-team CAA Championship in Harrisonburg.  JMU fell to 16-34-2 overall and 10-19 in league play. Read more
