Before the game, Brian O’Connor caught up with Bob Wease, who had recruited him to pitch for the Valley League’s Harrisonburg Turks back in 1990. The game itself worked out well for O’Connor’s top-ranked Virginia baseball team, which broke up a close game with a pair of unearned runs in the ninth to defeat James Madison 6-3. Afterwards, the UVa. skipper was gushing about the homecoming of sorts that had played itself out with a school-record baseball crowd of more than 2,400 including approximately 600 fans that watched the game from a hill before the left-field fence at JMU’s new Veterans Memorial Park.

“I was really, really impressed. Obviously JMU has a beautiful facility here, first-class, and to have this kind of crowd is exciting for them, and also equally exciting for us,” O’Connor said. Read more

Greenberg: Oh, yeah, he’s gone

“I’m the coach at Virginia Tech.”

That was Seth Greenberg’s answer over the weekend at the end of an interview on ESPN in which he was trying to sell his Virginia Tech team’s NCAA Tournament hopes to the world to a question about whatever interest he might have in the open St. John’s job.

Interesting choice of words, and all we can do right now is parse them. “I’m the coach at Virginia Tech.” OK for a declarative statement. Could’ve said, “No interest,” or something akin. But no, he said he’s the coach at Virginia Tech.

Ahem, let me go ahead and speculate that Greenberg will take the St. John’s job if offered. The reason: What else can he do in Blacksburg at this point? Read more

I don’t know who will be named CAA Coach of the Year for the 2009-2010 season, but our vote goes to Waynesboro’s own Kenny Brooks, who guided his JMU Dukes to their first conference tournament championship Sunday by thrashing perennial power Old Dominion by 15 points in the championship game Sunday afternoon.

Yes, we know the Lady Dukes were playing in their own Convocation Center, but remember that the students were still on Spring Break and the Lady Monarchs had beaten the Dukes on the JMU court during the regular-season. But the JMU Band, which is equal in energy and quality to the Virginia Pep Band, provided an emotional edge for the Lady Dukes who were able to sleep in their own beds during the stretch of three straight games. A Devon Brown jumper with 4.2 seconds left sent Liberty to the NCAA Tournament with a 68-66 win over Gardner-Webb in the championship game of the Big South Tournament on Sunday.

Brown, a 2008 Waynesboro High School grad, led all players with 24 points and was named the Big South Tournament most valuable player. The Big South title is the third in a row for Liberty, which is 27-5 in 2009-2010.

Gardner-Webb, the Big South regular-season champion, fell to 28-4 with the loss, which ended a 16-game winning streak. Read more

Virginia Tech did itself no favor in going one-and-done in Greensboro, no doubt. But is that why the Hokies are NIT-bound?

Can’t say that with any authority. Wake Forest and Clemson both lost on Thursday and got bids.

Both played Virginia Tech once in the 2009-2010 regular season. Both lost those games. Read more

Down five runs with one out in the ninth inning Saturday night, the Virginia baseball team staged an incredible rally and scored six times to shock Florida State, 9-8, at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla. Keith Werman (So., Vienna, Va.) supplied the eventual game-winning hit – a two-out, bases-loaded single to left-center which scored John Hicks (So., Sandy Hook, Va.) and Reed Gragnani (Fr., Richmond, Va.).

With the victory, Virginia clinched its first-ever series win – home or away – against Florida State. UVa shut out the Seminoles, 5-0, Friday night.

The teams will play the final game of the series at 1 p.m. Sunday. The game will be televised live on Sun Sports, and the broadcast also will be picked up by Fox College Sports. Read more
