Squirrels get W to break losing skid The Richmond Flying Squirrels (21-24) snapped a four-game losing streak behind eight strong innings from right-hander Chris Heston on Tuesday night at Prince George’s Stadium.

Richmond prevailed, 3-1, over the Bowie Baysox (18-26) as Heston took over the league ERA lead, departing with a mark of just 0.61.  Heston has not allowed an earned run in the month of May, and has allowed just one over his last six starts. Read more

Wendell Eberly to head EMU’s new golf programs

Eastern Mennonite University has announced the hiring of Wendell Eberly as the school’s first-ever head golf coach.

Eberly, also an alumnus and former women’s basketball coach, will head both the men’s and women’s golf teams at EMU, both of which will be a varsity sport for the first time this fall. Read more

Minor League Roundup: P-Nats blanked, Richmond falls

Wilmington blanks P-Nats Behind a stellar start from Greg Billo, the Wilmington Blue Rocks shut out the Potomac Nationals 7-0 at Frawley Stadium on Monday Night.  The Blue Rocks held the Nationals to just two-hits in their first meeting of the season in Delaware.

Against P-Nats starter Matt Swynenberg, Wilmington opened the scoring in the third inning.  Juan Graterol led off the inning with a double and scored on a Whit Merrifield double to give the Rocks a 1-0 lead.  Brian Fletcher knocked in Merrifield to increase the lead to 2-0 for Wilmington. Three Cavs named to All-ACC baseball team

Three members of the Virginia baseball team have been named to the 2012 All-ACC Team, which was announced Monday by the conference office.

Branden Kline (Jr., Frederick, Md.), Justin Thompson (Sr., Danville, Va.) and Keith Werman (Sr., Vienna, Va.) each were the named to the All-ACC second team. The All-ACC team was voted upon by the league’s 12 head coaches. Read more

Tickets to The Kingsmill Championship now on sale

Kingsmill Resort announced today that tickets for the upcoming Kingsmill Championship are now on sale.  The championship will welcome back the world’s best women golfers to the renowned River Course on Sept. 6-9.

The Kingsmill Championship is considered to be one of the premier golf tournaments on the LPGA Tour. Kingsmill Resort first hosted the event in 2003 and has had past champions that include Annika Sorenstam, Grace Park, Karrie Webb and two-time champion Cristie Kerr. Read more

Cavs rally falls short in lax quarters

Steele Stanwick tallied seven points, but it wasn’t enough as the No. 5 seeded Virginia Cavaliers (12-4) are eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by the No. 4 seeded Notre Dame Fighting Irish (13-2) on Sunday, 12-10, inside PPL Park.  It is the first time UVa has lost in the NCAA Quarterfinal round since 1998 and the Cavaliers fail to make the semifinal round for the first time since the 2007 season.

Stanwick concludes his illustrious career with 269 career points, tying him with Hartford’s Brian LaMastro (1999-02) for No. 18 all-time in NCAA Division I history.  The seven points also give Stanwick 57 for his career in the NCAA Tournament, breaking the UVa record of 52 held by Tim Whiteley. Minor League Roundup: Richmond swept, P-Nats, ‘Cats, SalemSox win

Akron completes sweep of Squirrels The Akron Aeros (26-14) completed a three-game sweep of the Richmond Flying Squirrels (20-23) with a, 3-2, victory in front of 3,041 at Canal Park on Sunday afternoon.  It marks the first time the Squirrels have been swept this season.  Richmond also has now equaled their longest losing-skid of the season at three games.

The Aeros once again got out to a quick start, plating a run on four straight hits to start the first inning.  Richmond right-hander Craig Westcott surrendered back-to-back singles to Tim Fedroff and Ben Copeland to start the inning.  Fedroff was thrown out trying to go first-to-third on Copeland’s single to right field, but Copeland took second on the throw.  He scored from there when Adam Abraham lifted a double off the wall in center field.  Squirrels’ center fielder Gary Brown nearly made the catch on the ball as he crashed into the center-field fence.  Brown was unharmed on the play, but the Aeros took a 1-0 lead.
