Burress Community Garden Party

staunton virginiaThe Burress Community Garden (formerly the Stafford Street Garden), now in its seventh year, will get under way this Friday at 3:30pm with a garden party.

The garden this year has two groups sponsoring it as guardians.  The Mary Baldwin College VWIL cadets under the leadership of Brigadier General Terry Djuric, will be maintaining the garden while they are in session.

While the cadets are away for the summer, a group of volunteers from First Baptist Church in Staunton will be the co-guardians. The garden is made possible by the hard work of volunteers and supporters in the community.

The addition of garden paths and picnic area was the WHSV TV3 Good Neighbor Project in 2014.  Garden donors include the William’s Brothers Tree and Landscaping, Virginia Frame & Building, Inc., Cadence, Lowes  and Vulcan Quarry.

This permanent garden location was opened in 2014 to provide a source of beauty and nourishment for the neighborhood in honor of the late Priscilla Burress.  The garden was made possible by William and Tamatha Burress of Tennessee – who provided the land for the project.

The garden was made possible by a collaboration between Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Habitat for Humanity and Willie and Cliff Jones, William’s Brothers Tree and Landscaping, Virginia Frame & Building, Inc., Cadence, Lowes , Vulcan Quarry, the Booker T. Community Center, and the Boys and Girls Club.

Establishment of the garden is a tribute to the neighbors who come out to till, to sow, to nurture, and to reap.  Garden boxes will be assigned to local residents to encourage community participation and healthy lifestyles.
