Broomley Road bridge in Ivy to close May 11

road-work-headerConstruction will begin Monday, May 11 on the Route 677 (Broomley Road) bridge over the Buckingham Branch Railroad, located off Route 250 (Ivy Road) in western Albemarle County.

Virginia Department of Transportation contractor Orders Construction Company, Inc. of St. Albans, W.Va. was awarded the $3.31 million project in February. Their work will include removing the existing aged bridge, built in 1932, which is posted at a 10-ton weight limit, and replacing it with a single-span steel truss bridge capable of carrying all legal loads.

The Route 677 bridge will be closed to through traffic while construction work occurs. Detour signs will direct southbound motorists right on Route 677 (Old Ballard Road), which will be narrowed to one lane near the intersection, then left onto Route 676/678 (Owensville Road) and out to Route 250. Northbound motorists will reverse the detour.

During the closure access will be maintained to all residences and businesses, including Ivy Nursery, which is located just south of the bridge.

The project has a fixed completion date of Nov. 16.
