The Bridgewater College Symphonic Band will present a concert on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 3 p.m., in Cole Hall.

The Symphonic Band is directed by Dr. Christine Carrillo, assistant professor of music and director of instrumental music at Bridgewater College.

To honor the life of renowned composer Elliot Del Borgo, who died on May 30, the Symphonic Band will perform “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night.” Del Borgo – inspired by the Dylan Thomas poem of the same name – attempted to recreate the poem’s essence in the sound of the music.

The concert also features a new composition for band. Vignettes by David Avshalomov, is an assortment of short, varied, dynamic, miniature character pieces that are fun to play and listen to. The Bridgewater College Symphonic Band was a member of the international commissioning consortium for this work, the only ensemble from Virginia to be a member.

The concert also includes James Stephenson’s “Concerto for Cell Phone,” a light-hearted commentary on the ever-present, yet sometimes unfortunate, interruptions that take place in the concert hall as a result of technological advances of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,850 undergraduate students.
