Bridgewater College presents 2018 Education Awards

bridgewater collegeBridgewater College’s Teacher Education Program presented two awards at the college awards ceremony on April 22.

The Virginia Scholars Award was presented to Bridgewater College senior Emily Morris.

The award honors an outstanding woman at each of Virginia’s four-year colleges and universities who has demonstrated a potential for distinctive service in any field of education.

Morris, a liberal studies and Spanish double major, is the daughter of Jeff and Connie Morris of Grottoes, Va.

She is a member of the Philomathes Society, Bridgewater’s scholastic honor society, and Alpha Mu Gamma, a national collegiate foreign language honor society. She is a member of the college’s Flory Honors Program.

She is a member of the World Languages Club and the Latino Student Association.

Morris spent the 2017 fall semester studying abroad in Spain. During the spring 2018 semester, she is student-teaching at Plains Elementary School.

Following graduation on May 5, Morris will teach English as a Second Language (ESL) at Skyline Middle School.

Five seniors were selected as a Virginia Teacher of Promise, an organization that recognizes the best prospective teachers in the United States. Recipients become part of a larger Teachers of Promise network, whose purpose is to discover, recognize and grow the next generation of great teachers.

Selected from Bridgewater College were: Scarlett Bavin, Amelia Bayer, Carrie Anne Dean, Ashton Terry Rittenhouse and Joshua Yagel.

Bavin, a liberal studies major, is the daughter of Nigel and Aine Bavin of Mechanicsville, Va. During the 2018 spring semester, she is student-teaching at Churchville Elementary School.

Bayer, an English major, is the daughter of Scott and Linda Bayer of Doylestown, Pa. She is student-teaching at Spotswood High School.

Dean, a liberal studies major, is the daughter of Jerry and Lori Flick of Harrisonburg, Va. During the 2017 fall semester, Dean completed student-teaching at W.W. Robinson Elementary School.

Rittenhouse, a liberal studies major, is the daughter of Henry and Valory Terry of Broadway, Va. Rittenhouse is student-teaching at Plains Elementary School.

Joshua Yagel, a health and physical education major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Yagel of Olney, Md. Yagel completed student-teaching during the 2017 fall semester at Turner Ashby High School.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to more than 1,900 undergraduate students.
