Bowie completes sweep of Richmond: Squirrels winless on road trip

richmond-squirrelsThe Bowie Baysox plated six runs in the fourth inning to overtake the Richmond Flying Squirrels, and never looked back on Tuesday morning at Prince George’s Stadium.  The Baysox rolled to a, 10-4, victory, sending the Squirrels to their sixth consecutive defeat.  Richmond also endured a winless (0-5) road trip and have dropped eight of their last nine.

Baysox righty Parker Bridwell was erratic in the second inning, and the Squirrels took advantage to grab the lead first.  Devin Harris got Richmond started with a single, and an out later, Ricky Oropesa also singled.  Bridwell then got wild, walking both Jackson Williams and Kelby Tomlinson to force in the game’s first run.

The Squirrels took a more conventional route in the third.  Mitch Delfino opened the inning with a single and Mac Williamson followed with a massive two-run home run to left field.  Williamson’s first Double-A home run gave the Squirrels a 3-0 lead.

Richmond right-hander Chris Stratton had no trouble with the Baysox through the first three innings as he faced just one over the minimum.  However, the wheels fell off the wagon in the fourth.  An error charged to Oropesa to start the inning allowed Glynn Davis to reach and started an avalanche for Bowie.  Stratton followed the error with back-to-back walks issued to Mike McDade and Rossmel Perez.  Jason Esposito put the Baysox on the board with a two-run single, which Chris O’Brien followed with a single.  Michael Burgess then cracked a two-run double into the right-field corner and Bowie had the lead for the first time, 4-3.  Stratton was abruptly chased from the ballgame in favor of righty Stephen Johnson.  Both inherited runners would score on a Sharlon Schoop single and Bowie led, 6-3.  The six runs conceded were the most allowed by the Squirrels in a single inning this season, and were all charged to Stratton.

Stratton (0-2) took his second loss of the year, having allowed those six runs, five of which were earned.  He allowed four hits, walked two and struck out two.

Things turned ugly for Johnson and the Squirrels as a whole in the bottom of the fifth.  Perez and Esposito both singled before O’Brien delivered the knockout blow with a three-run home run to right field.  O’Brien’s second of the year made it 9-3 Bowie.

Bridwell was ineligible for the win, lasting just four innings plus two batters.  The win went instead to Terry Doyle (1-0), who worked four sturdy innings of relief.  He allowed just a lone run – on a Tomlinson single – and bridged the game through the eighth.

The Baysox capped the day’s scoring with a run off righty Tyler Rogers in the seventh.  Bowie right-hander Bobby Bundy finished the game with a clean ninth.

The Squirrels will return to RVA to enjoy a scheduled off day on Wednesday.  They open their second homestand of the season and a four-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats (Colorado Rockies) at The Diamond on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m.  The Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup will begin at 6 p.m. on Fox Sports 910 and FoxSportsRichmond.com.
