002_Carlson_Kirkland_DuoBert Carlson was ready to return to Wayne Theatre Alliance’s Gateway after his February 2012 performance, but his career was interrupted by a medical emergency. Now he is back and raring to go with a concert at WTA’s Gateway on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. Joining Carlson will be his long-time musical partner, Jennifer Kirkland. It is not certain but others may join him as well.

Bert Carlson started playing guitar professionally in Illinois. In 1985, he moved to Washington, D.C., where for the next 14 years he averaged over 300 engagements a year, doing music in a variety of styles and venues. His recording in D.C. included commercials, television spots, film music, and studio work on various CDs. In 1999 he moved to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and joined forces with Jennifer Kirkland. The duo was selected as members of the prestigious Virginia Commission for the Arts Touring Artists roster.

The evening of jazz will give the audience a chance to hear Carlson performing on what he calls his rarely heard wolf pack of vintage acoustic and electric guitars and to listen to what critics have called Jennifer Kirkland’s voice “a blending of the best of the sounds of Julie London, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, and Norah Jones.”

WTA’s Gateway is the ideal location for the Still Kickin’ and Still Pickin’ Concert. It was voted the best music venue in the Shenandoah Valley by readers of Virginia Living and The News Virginian.

The ‘Still Kickin’ and Still Pickin’ Concert is part of the Custin Jazz Series which brings regional, national and international jazz artists to the local audience.

Tickets for the performance are available online or by calling the box office 540-943-9999. Admission is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. WTA’s Gateway is located at 329 W. Main St., Waynesboro, VA.
