Contractors are nearing completion of the roadway improvement project along Route 696 (Selma-Low Moor Road) at Interstate 64 exit 21 and Winterberry Avenue (Route 1101) in Alleghany County. Motorists should be alert for traffic-pattern changes and daytime lane closures for the next three weeks.
From Monday through Wednesday, June 18-20, final paving and line-painting are scheduled to take place on Route 696 and Winterberry Avenue. This work requires alternating lane closures with flagger traffic control on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
On the evening of Wednesday, June 20, new traffic signals are scheduled to go into flash mode along Route 696 at the intersections with Winterberry Avenue and the I-64 eastbound and westbound ramps. Route 696 drivers will have a flashing yellow caution light at each intersection. Motorists approaching Route 696 from Winterberry or the interstate off-ramps will have a flashing red light.
Motorists should be alert for changing traffic patterns and occasional lane closures through early July, when traffic signals at all three intersections are expected to go into full operation.
The Route 696/I-64 Exit 21 Project includes new turn lanes and coordinated traffic signals. This project will improve traffic flow on Route 696 and Winterberry Avenue and alleviate traffic backups on the I-64 ramps and mainline. In April 2017 the Virginia Department of Transportation awarded a $3.65 million contract to Phillips Construction LLC of Henderson, Kentucky. Completion is scheduled for mid-July 2018.
