Generals lose opener at Covington, 11-10

Waynesboro stormed back from an early 6-0 deficit to take a 10-6 lead, but a five-run sixth-inning rally pushed the Lumberjacks to a wild 11-10 win Saturday night.

Greg Cooke (0-1) took the tough-luck loss for the Generals, giving up five runs, all unearned, in that wild sixth inning, which saw Covington score all its runs after there were two outs in the inning.

Waynesboro had scored six runs in the top half of the sixth inning to come all the way back from the 6-0 deficit to lead 10-6, the big hit of the inning being a two-run double down the right-field line off the bat of Seth Lucio.

The Generals made it interesting late, stranding runners at second and third in the eighth and just missing getting a three-run homer from designated hitter Michael Katz before his long drive was caught at the fence by Covington center fielder Alex Marrero.

Patrick Kulik (1-0) got the win in relief for Covington, and Tyler Redding notched his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Waynesboro opens its home season Sunday night at 7 p.m. at Kate Collins Field. Devin Smith will get the start on the mound for the Generals as they host the New Market Rebels.
