Longwood 87, Farleigh Dickinson 83


Longwood University took an 87-83 men’s basketball victory on the road at Fairleigh Dickinson University of the Northeast Conference Monday afternoon in Hackensack, New Jersey.  The Lancers (7-12) closed the first half with a 16-6 run to lead 37-33 at halftime, and secured their second road win in three games with 6-8 free throws in the final minute against the Knights (1-16).

Longwood was led by seniors Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) with 22 points, Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 20 points, and Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch) with 18 points along with sophomore Tristan Carey|Colonial Beach (La Salle) with 15 points.  FDU was led by Melquan Bolding with a career-high and game-high 38 points.

Longwood started somewhat sluggish as Fairleigh Dickinson took an early 16-10 lead at 13:31 behind nine quick points from Bolding.  The Lancers began battling back, though, and took their first lead at 19-18 on a three-point field goal by Carey.  Bolding capped a 9-2 run by the Knights with a steal and dunk for a 27-21 advantage at 6:30.  LU, however, scored 10 unanswered points to lead 31-27 at 3:08 as Washington made a three-pointer.  Longwood continued its momentum and completed the half on a 16-6 run to lead 37-33 at the intermission as Washington finished the period with 11 points, and Carey had 10 firt-half points for the visitors.

Longwood extended its run into the second half, scoring the first nine points to take its largest lead at 46-33 with 17:37 remaining — a 25-6 run over the last 5:43 of the first half and the first 2:23 of the second half.  FDU rallied back with an 11-2 run to close to within 48-44 at 15:04 as George Goode scored seven quick points.  The Lancers led 52-44 at 14:50 after a pair of free throws by sophomore David Robinson|Chesterfield (Cosby) as a result of a technical foul whistled on the home bench.  The technical sparked the Knights who ran off 10-straight points to lead 54-52 at 12:20 on a three-pointer and the game remained close the rest of the way.  There were seven ties down the stretch, including at 61-61 (9:45) on a layup from Carter, 65-65 (8:28) on another layup by Carter, and 69-69 (5:42) on a pair of free throws from Carter who played the final 16:24 with four fouls.  It was 76-76 with 2:48 left after a basket from Goode, but Bowman scored five-straight points for LU that included a three-pointer (2:20) to go ahead for good and driving layup (1:45) off a steal by Carter to lead 81-76.  Longwood secured the win with 6-8 free throws over the final 56-seconds, including 3-4 made by Carey.

Bowman led Longwood with his 22 points, including 14 in the second half, adding a game-high eight assists.  Carter finished with 20 points, including 16 in the second half, adding eight rebounds for the Lancers.  Washington had 18 points, including four three-pointers, and Carey added 15 points.  LU shot 44% (27-62) from the field, including 42% (11-26) on three-pointers, and 76% (22-29) at the free throw line.

Bolding led Fairleigh Dickinson with his career-high and game-high 38 points.  Goode added 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Knights.  FDU shot 48% (29-61) from the field, including 28% (5-18) on three-pointers, and 77% (20-26) at the line.

It was the third meeting between the two schools in the sport as Longwood leads the series at 2-1.
