Reality check for UVa. baseball

Still-for-the-moment #1 Virginia is probably the most wounded 45-9 team in college-baseball history.

Consider:

  • Friday-night starter Danny Hultzen has lost three of his last four after starting the year 8-0 and starting his UVa. career 28-2.
  • Total run support for Hultzen in the three losses (to N.C. State, Miami and UNC): 5.
  • Total runs scored in the three-game sweep at UNC this weekend: 3.
  • Total runs for Cavs in their last six games: 15. (Record in that span: 2-4.)
  • Record in their final 12 ACC games: 6-6.

Hultzen seems to have lost something off his fastball, and something more off his confidence. The lineup isn’t producing. The bullpen is shaky.

At least UVa. won’t go into the postseason overconfident.
