The River City Radio Hour performances on Friday will be an eclectic mix of musical and comedy talents.

The Boogie Kings, led by Richard Adams with William Hayes on keyboard and J.T. Fauber on percussion, will head the musical entertainment. Joining the popular Radio Hour band will be Bill Harouff.

Bill Harouff and his wife Loraine are known throughout the Valley for their special take on the folk music of the region. Bill began singing in high school and joined the folk music scene of the 1960s. He and his wife helped form the popular band Windfall in 1983. Read more

Groups critical of McDonnell action on voting rights

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today a new procedure for restoring the voting rights of former felons that voting-rights advocacy groups feel falls short of the goal of making it easier for people who have paid their debt to society to get back on the voting rolls.

“These changes hardly equal reform. Virginia is one of only two states remaining that permanently deny access to the franchise for people with felony convictions and when/if a person right’s are restored it is still up to the discretion of the governor. Restoration of voting rights should not be handled on a case by case basis,” said Sabrina Williams of The Advancement Project in a press statement. Read more

I had the wonderful experience of being the research rat for ketones last night. This reminds me of the Keystone Cops with the Keystone Cops being your blood glucose meter.

According to http://diabetes.webmd.com/ketones-14241, ketone test checks for ketone in your blood or urine. Ketones are substances that are made when the body breaks down fat for energy. Normally, your body gets the energy it needs from carbohydrate in your diet. But stored fat is broken down and ketones are made if your diet does not contain enough carbohydrate to supply the body with sugar (glucose) for energy or if your body cannot use blood sugar (glucose) properly. Gov. Bob McDonnell is to be commended for appointing a Commission on Government Reform and Restructuring to “make government simpler and easier to use, more efficient and more effective.” The 30-person commission made up of businesspersons and legislators has an ambitious schedule of completing its initial report in two months on July 16, 2010. The final report deadline of Dec. 1, 2010, suggests that there will not be a special legislative session to deal with the recommendations this fall. Read more

Tom Perriello: Reducing the burden

Column by Tom Perriello

One of my top priorities in Congress has been reducing financial burden on middle- and working-class families during these tough economic times. Last week, USA TODAY reported that Americans paid their lowest level of taxes in 2009 since Harry Truman’s presidency. The news story reported: “Federal, state and local taxes – including income, property, sales and other taxes – consumed 9.2 percent of all personal income in 2009, the lowest rate since 1950, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports. That rate is far below the historic average of 12 percent for the last half-century.” Read more

In recent days we’ve seen another tough economic blow for our friends and families in Southside Virginia. Stanley Furniture, a fixture in Henry County for nearly 90 years, announced it will shutter its factory near Martinsville and relocate more than 560 jobs overseas. That tough news comes on the heels of promising job announcements by two smaller employers just a few weeks earlier. Read more
