How totally ignorant is this piece? It is unfortunate that Mr. Boudreaux, as a economist, and a major university is somehow unaware of the data in the industry. Study after study finds that quality deteriorates in direct relationship with the profit incentive in healthcare. I have spent many years in the healthcare consulting arena and can tell you that the private healthcare system in the US is specifically set up to "maximize" the revenue through manipulation of coding, denial of coverage and many more tactics. While I suspect that the main problem is out private insurance system and not, specifically, the physicians and other healthcare providers, I have seen an overwhelming number of abuses that can really only be subsidized (and perpetuated) through a for profit system.

If we truly want to deliver better healthcare outcomes and are serious about taking care of our citizenry (let alone competing with the rest of the industrialized nations) then a Single Payer system is really the only solution.

This isn't even an argument. The entire piece chronicles airport problems and then tries to tie it to government inability to provide health care. It's sad when academics appear to be bankrolled enough to stoop to writing pieces that rely on this kind of folksy logic.
It's hard to imagine that the writer has ever looked at comparative data about profit within world health care systems.
But perhaps facts rank second to ideology for those who have their own profit motives.

p.s. it costs over 100,000.00 for standard cncr trtmnt in the usa.(and most die from it)
it costs under 10,000.00 to fly to europe/mexico/canada, to be cured without drugs.
because anyone can find this out for now, google will be/has been censored, just like ebay and paybal both have been somewhat already.(see doctorsaredangerous, and try to find the totally effective not-toxic virus killer colloidal silver cleaner).... aaarrrgggHHH! greed prevents life (whole, complete, healthy, simple)
signed j.elohim try the yahoo.

Dare you(who?) publish the truth? The fda forbids it. The ama forbids it. And the fda and the ama has the force of (unjust)law behind them, and the force to ENFORCE corrupt policies/censorship/banning...
The most successful healers in the u.s.a/canada DID NOT HAVE A PROFIT MOTIVE.
See Carey Reams and the woman Caisse, then Max Gerson, Shutes, cottage cheese with flax, vitamin a cures leukemia(ama,1962), and most simply amazing acv for sinuses (2 cents for immediate relief 95% of the time).
The truth is, greed does not allow nor even want the truth published.(you think you were taught the truth, ever?... wrong!)
Your whole system you were raised in is corrupt, throughout the world.

Excellent essay. My alma mater (a public university) operates a health clinic on campus that is notorious for long waits, bad service, and poor medical treatment. I often tell people that this is what we could expect of all healthcare if it were run by government bureaucrats.

[...] Here’s column of mine in which I ponder the mystery: why in the world do people want to entrus...? I conclude with this thought: The long lines at passport control and the post office, along with the indifferent “service” typically rendered there, are too common not to be symptomatic of government supply. When customers neither pay directly for what they receive nor have the option either of not paying for the product at all or of seeking an alternative supplier, government employees have little incentive to respond to the wishes of the people they are allegedly employed to serve.
