The 20th-ranked Virginia women’s basketball team fell on the road to Wake Forest, 64-57, Sunday afternoon. Lexie Gerson was the Cavaliers’ high scorer with a career-high 15 points, while Monica Wright had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Virginia’s record dropped to 15-6, 4-3 in the ACC with the loss. Wake Forest improved to 13-8, 4-3 in the league.
Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) hit three three-pointers and added two steals. Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) was also in double figures, as she netted 14 points.
The Demon Deacons led 29-21 at halftime. Virginia opened the second half on a 10-3 run to cut the lead to 32-31 with 16:25 left to play. Wake Forest withstood the run, never lost the lead and countered with a run of its own later in the half, extending its lead to 12 points, 49-37, with eight minutes left in the game.
Two three-pointers by Lexie Gerson at the 7:20 and 6:20 mark energized Virginia, and the Cavaliers pulled to within six points, 53-47, at the final media timeout.
The Cavaliers eventually got to within a basket, 54-52, but Demon Deacon forward Sandra Garcia got a put-back lay-up with less than a minute left to make it a two-possession game and essentially shut the door on the Cavaliers.
Wake Forest made its free throws down the stretch to win by a final score of 64-57.
Garcia finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds for Wake Forest. It was just the third win for Wake Forest against Virginia, as the all-time series now stands at 60-3.
