Hunter S. Thompson….the “go to” reference for hipster new writers (most of whom have not read an inkling of his work)…

    hmm…alright then…

“No man is so foolish but he may sometimes give another good counsel, and no man so wise that he may not easily err if he takes no other counsel than his own. He that is taught only by himself has a fool for a master.”

In my readings of his (albeit limited to 3 or 4 of his works, however I do not claim to be a writer or a journalist, i am merely a scientist), “self reflection”, in a critical sense was a key to his writing and understanding of the world around him. Also key was blame lay in the most obvious, not the most dubious, of places.

    Therefore:

“Landesberg picks up two quick fouls. (He committed neither.)”

“Nice job by the officials making this one a game. The two nonfouls on Landesberg that removed him from the equation has made this one interesting.
Why not let the teams decide who wins?”

“MVP of the first half-The World’s Worst Basketball Official, Karl Hess”

“Being honored at halftime-the 2009 national champion UVa. men’s soccer team. Virginia Tech fans in attendance wonder to themselves, What does it feel like to go to a school that has won a national championship?”

“As one could predict, Hess and Co. feel the need to get Tech back in the game.”

I would argue that the above is not being critical of the ins and ouuts of the game, but instead, searching for the justification of a change in a predicted outcome. That, sir, is not journalism. That is message board fodder or, as stated before, the content expected on a fan site.

As I have stated before, your site does a lot of things right, but you need to learn to accept when you produce drivel such as what was produced above and learn from it, not defend it.

As stated before, you need to loosen up. Nothing about the title “Live Blog” states or implies or intimates journalism. If we’d called it a “treatise,” different story.

You seem to expect weighty journalism from a live blog about a basketball game. And you’ve spent way, way too much time making that point.

And detached as you try to make yourself, you can’t resist diving into the muck yourself.

    - “Hunter S. Thompson….the “go to” reference for hipster new writers (most of whom have not read an inkling of his work)…”

Very professional. Deride me as a name-dropper. This gutter tripe is, I hope, not a representation of the quality of your work at Pitt. What’s next – are you going to ask me if I still beat my wife?

  3. Virginia Resident says:

I did not take a lot of time to respond here. I thought that some constructive criticism of a page that I frequent might be taken as educational, not as an attack.

I accused you of nothing. I was simply making a general statement about the Hunter S. Thompson reference. If you took it as a personal attack, I apologize as that was not my intention.

Also, I am not a journalist, so it is not on me to “stay out of the muck”, even though I did.

As for my “work at Pitt”, so much for the anonymity of a blog, but whatever. Feel free to check into “my work at Pitt.” It speaks for itself and it is easily available and my email address is all you need to find it, I am sure.

You’ve gone on and on here about what you think is wrong with journalism. What I think is wrong with journalism – “the anonymity of a blog.”

My name is Chris Graham. I live in Waynesboro. I am a Virginia resident. I am the editor of AugustaFreePress.com and The New Dominion Magazine.

I’ve been lectured today on journalism practices and ethics by someone who uses “the anonymity of a blog” to take personal shots and then makes it clear that even a passing reference to a real identity in response to the personal shots is verboten.

This blog is hardly a peer review. I seriously doubt that your work is scrutinized by people with CB handles for names.

This is what it is. It’s a blog! A “Live Blog” that is now two weeks old!

That said, thanks for helping give the story legs, I guess. (Never mind how inane today’s discussion might have been. And it was quite the waste of time for all involved.)

  5. Virginia Resident says:

    You take criticism well.

I have not personally attacked you, for the record. I have chosen to be critical of your work.

The comment about AugustaFreePress.com being a “fan site,” the reference to the mention of Hunter S. Thompson as being a go-to reference for “hipster new writers (most of whom have not read an inkling of his work”- nah, nothing personal there. How could a reasonable person assume anything of the sort?

I’m sorry to have had to point out that you have engaged in the same kind of behavior that you had started out wanting to deride.

To reinforce, this thread was a “Live Blog” providing a place for score updates, game commentary and analysis that was produced as had been advertised. To subject this “Live Blog” to media criticism is to give it weight that it doesn’t deserve.

Loosen up a bit and enjoy life.

  7. Virginia Resident says:

Did you miss this from above. It is kind of stuck in the middle, I suppose:

“I accused you of nothing. I was simply making a general statement about the Hunter S. Thompson reference. If you took it as a personal attack, I apologize as that was not my intention.”

I enjoy my life quite a bit, but I wish you would learn to take criticism from a frequent reader of your stuff a little bit better.

Your work is in the public domain, and therefore subject to critique. Mine is as well, and I have given you access. I assume that you will keep that to yourself, but feel free to critique it.

    I appreciate all input.

  8. Chris Graham says:

Thanks for the frequent reading, I guess. From your first sentence expressing your hope that I’m not “employed as any sort of journalist,” I don’t know, I guess you “had me at hello,” to manipulate the line from “Jerry Maguire.”

It might make me a bad person, and if it does, so be it, but I hope I never learn to take criticism that begins that way “well.” Those who can take that “well” are those utterly lacking in spine, if you ask me.

  9. Virginia Resident says:

    Touche’

    That was over the top.

    I apologize for that.

  10. Brian Rostron says:

I just seemed to be il-infomed on your central dogma.

the “go to” reference for hipster new writers (most of whom have not read an inkling of his work)

you should strive to be as unbiased and above water as you can if you want to be taken seriously.

    ****
I want to read more from Virginia Resident. Then again, I tend to enjoy non-standard syntax and word usage. (I do!)

One guy said Tech beats UVA in footbal and basketball. What other sports do you watch or do you only pay attention to sports you win.If so you only win in two sports out of all of them.We won a national championship last year, did you?We made it to the College World Series in Baseball last year, where was Tech?Your most famous athelete went to jail for Dog fighting. If its not obviouse then just look aroud the NFL and all the UVA guys accually playing and paying well.Where are Techs stars. The fact is we get smarter player who perform well at the next level. You may have the better teams in football but our players end up being better players and people. If you cant get in to VIrginia go to TECH!
