League backs Petersen’s green initiative

The Virginia League of Conservation Voters has announced its support of the Green Public Buildings Act and the Steps to Advance Virginia’s Energy Plan Act, part of State Sen. Chap Petersen’s energy conservation plan for Virginia.
The Green Public Buildings Act, Senate Bill No. 109, requires all new construction or new renovations of state buildings to comply with the LEED Silver or Green Globes two globe standard to reduce utility usage, preserve the environment and save tax dollars. The bill has been referred to the General Laws Committee.
“I am pleased that my friends at the League of Conservation Voters, who represent Virginia’s broad-based grassroots conservation effort, endorse this legislation,” said Sen. Petersen in response to the League’s support.
The Virginia League of Conservation Voters is a non-partisan organization dedicated to the advocacy of conservation issues defined by various organizations such as the Sierra Club and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network.
The SAVE Act, Senate Bill No. 112, permits natural gas utilities to petition the State Corporation Commission for a separate rider that will ultimately allow investment in infrastructure improvements and avoid leaks. The bill has been referred to the Committee on Commerce & Labor.
“Pipes of greater integrity can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. At least a million tons of carbon will not be released because of these upgraded systems,” said Cathie France on behalf of the local natural gas industry.
I think this is great news.
Please remember, that individuals do not have to wait for government to take action; it is within each household’s power to make a difference.
