How nice – one local government here locally is saying it will give its residents a break from requirements to have sidewalks clear following the end of a winter-storm event due to the enormity of the event that we endured over the weekend.

AFP editor Chris Graham wonders aloud in today’s Rant on the incursion into private-property rights from such requirements.

Excellent!! You need to be carefull tho, you might just start seeing the other unbelievable intrution(s) into our lives that has and is being forced upon us by our government. What’s next you ask…….How bout being required under threat of fine or jail to buy health insurance(Federal Govt)….How about the ludicrous noise ordinance, that says if I yell Howdy to someone across the street to loud I can be fined(Waynesboro). How about being required for years and years to pay into Social Security and Medicare, just to have the rug pulled out from underneath us so other people who have either paid little or nothing can now benefit from my work and the money I worked hard for.(Federal Govt). How about what’s coming on my taxes once Medicaid “improvements” take effect.(State Govt.) Do you (or Webb or Warner) have even a hint as to how mad people are getting over this stuff. And folks, it’s only the beginning to somebody wanting to put their hands in my pocket and yours.. and it’s just the beginning of Government trying to control every aspect of our lives. As for me… I rather shovel snow.

On the one hand, the city wants to require folks to clean sidewalks after snowstorms. On the other hand, the city does a piss-poor job cleaning the streets, as in this storm. I just got back from driving to Wal-Mart (attempting to, anyway) to stock up on salt to clean the walkways around the home office. I can understand the paucity of effort on Church Street, which isn’t a main road. But Rosser, Lew Dewitt and the turning lanes into Wal-Mart? The last snowflake fell 48 hours ago. Think we might be able to get the slush off the main roads?

Just be glad you don’t live in Charlottesville. You probably would have ended up camping out overnight in the Aquatic and Fitness Center.

How dare anyone be put out by 2′ of snow. Damn the City!

Either do it right, or don’t do it. Get the slush out of the turning lanes, or just save the money and effort and wait for it all to melt.

I ain’t thinkin’ it’s that simple. They have to make the roads passible. Even Waynesboro will conceed that they should spend a little money on that. But I suspect it would take a lot of additional effort (especially once the cars begin using the roads) to get them completely clean.

Turning lanes and intersections should be something of a priority, though. It might not be that simple, agreed, but the idea should be passable and safe. I wouldn’t expect perfection given the circumstances, but I would expect thought combined with good effort. I think we’ve had good effort, but I’m not so sure about the thought.

Generally, my experiance has been that most problems seem easy until you dig into them and understand all the constraints. Of course, though I don’t think it’s the case, the City could have a bunch of folks working for them that just aren’t that smart.

Did it snow? Did I miss something?

I would advise the city “leaders” to clear to streets of snow before it tackles the sidewalk issue. The street I live on still have snow and ice on 40 % of the paved surface.
