		<description>Riane:  Good subject re your column. I agree that women need to be emancipated in those countries where they are held virtually like slaves at home.

However, you left out one very important fact, namely that their &quot;culture&quot; is actually a religious-based culture, Islam. Women usually cannot go outside of their home without a male escort, usually a family member, often on pain of death (i.e. Somalia, Saudi Arabia, some parts of Iraq, Pakistan, and much of Afghanistan (esp. the Taliban areas).

Without mentioning the religious basis of this &quot;banning&quot;, you leave out the &quot;cause&quot;, not the &quot;result&quot; of this policy.

The problem is, for women-rights reformers in many of these countries, they pay for their efforts with their lives. It is religious fascism that kills them. Unless you address that, all your efforts to help women in these situations of being trapped in their own homes, will continue unabated.

However, you have called attention to a serious issue and I congratulate you on taking this very important first step. Good luck and keep on fighting to improve the lot of women around the world.</description>
