Gov. Timothy M. Kaine issued the following statement today regarding the appointment of current Virginia Secretary of Finance Richard “Ric” Brown as Interim Secretary of Finance serving in the Cabinet of Governor-elect Bob McDonnell:

“By retaining Ric Brown on an interim basis in the key position of Secretary of Finance, Bob McDonnell has made a wise choice that preserves nearly four decades of experience working in state finances. Ric has skillfully served Virginia and its residents through the worst economic crisis since the 1930s—and his appointment ensures both continuity and consistency in the management of the state’s budget at a particularly critical time.

“Today’s news is especially heartening as my administration works to complete a biennial budget that will maintain Virginia’s coveted Triple-A bond rating status, protect core services for Virginians, and keep the Commonwealth on the path to future success. Even in these challenging economic times, Ric’s steady hand and thoughtful approach to our finances has helped Virginia perform well ahead of the rest of the nation.

“Ric’s selection is a validation of the fiscal management that has earned Virginia a rare Triple-A bond rating and the reputation as the best-managed state in America. I am confident that he will continue to lead the Commonwealth’s budget team in a manner that enhances our ability to attract and retain investments while prioritizing the interests of Virginia families.”
