Michael Harris announced yesterday that he will be challenging incumbent Ward D Waynesboro City Councilwoman Lorie Smith in the May 2010 city elections.
Harris, 62, made the announcement in front of a group of supporters in the Waynesboro City Council chambers Wednesday morning.
The announcement was covered in the News Virginian and News Leader Thursday-morning editions.
The Augusta Free Press was not made aware of the announcement event.
Harris is a Staunton native and retired Virginia state trooper who has lived in Waynesboro since 2004, according to the local-newspaper reports.
Smith is finishing her first term on City Council. She was elected in 2006 after serving a term on the Waynesboro School Board that included a stint as that board’s chair.

Two comments: First- the person responsible for failing to advise AFP of the news release was either inept or unaware of the protocol for such things !
In any event it is a poor start.Second- Mr. Harris may be a stand-up guy but how deep an understanding he has of the political gamesmanship the Council has endured over the recent past is a real concern! It promises a period of learning who the players are and their benefits/failures in solving the electorates problems! A delay we can ill afford. There is but one voice we can rely on to continue the promising start we have finally made : Lorie Smith!
