Focus | Navy veteran puts military stories into print

John Rudolph had just been on the phone with a Navy buddy sharing stories about their days in the military.
“My wife said, You’ve got so many of those stories, you ought to write a book. I don’t know if she meant it or not, but it got me to thinking,” said Rudolph, whose first book, A Squid’s Story: My First Four Years in the United States Navy, is now available for sale online.
Rudolph, who lives in Stuarts Draft, served in the Navy from 1980-2000. He wrote the book “mainly to have some kind of record of my history in the Navy,” he said, and he focused on the 1980-1984 time frame because of its historical significance in the Cold War era.
“I thought it was important to tell it from a human perspective. It’s a story set in the Cold War that includes what happened to me in my social life, my professional life and what I did in the Navy,” said Rudolph, who also wanted to share with readers the toll that military service takes on families as well.
“The families of those members who participated in the Cold War suffered because we were in and out all the time. We’d be out for a week, in for another month, out for another six months to nine months. A lot of the credit should go to our families because of the sacrifices that they made with us gone all the time,” Rudolph said.
