Former councilman agrees to plea
Former Waynesboro City Councilman DuBose Egleston pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor sexual-battery charge in Waynesboro General District Court on Monday, avoiding a jury trial on felony charges related to a reported Sept. 25 incident in Waynesboro.
Egleston, 55, who served on City Council from 1998-2002, and ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the city governing body a total of six times dating back to 1994.
The long-time city volunteer had been charged with attempted rape in a matter involving an unidentified acquaintance.
Egleston received a 60-day suspended jail sentence and was fined $1,000, with $500 of the fine also suspended.
The plea deal includes a provision barring Egleston from contact with the victim and another in which Egleston agrees to assume responsibility for medical and counseling bills associated with the incident.
