Scoring 28 of his game-high 32 points in the second half, Talor Battle led the Penn State Nittany Lions past Virginia 69-66 in the opening game of this week’s ACC-Big Ten challenge Monday evening in John Paul Jones Arena.
It was a game of momentum, as Penn State overcame a six-point halftime deficit to gain what appeared to be a secure lead at 55-43 with four minutes left in the game. Virginia, however, refused to go quietly and rode a barrage of three-point shots to close to within one at 67-66 with five seconds remaining. Read more

The United Way of Greater Augusta is teaming up with Smart Media on a public-awareness effort aimed at getting attention for the annual United Way campaign.
The Smart Media advertising mailer for December will feature information on the United Way campaign. The mailer will be in mailboxes beginning Tuesday, Dec. 1.
“This is a great way to reach those individuals who would not necessarily have the opportunity to become a part of our campaign through their work place,” stated Mary Louise Leake, United Way of Greater Augusta campaign director.
“This is exciting; it is not often that a campaign can reach that many people all at once,” Leake said. Read more

Before we get to the next UVa. football coach topic, I have a commentary on a point raised in Daily Progress sports editor Jerry Ratcliffe’s column on the sacking of Al Groh.
Ratcliffe wrote that it was “bush league” for the athletics department to have informed the news media of Groh’s dismissal before he could talk to his assistant coaches, most of whom ended up being jettisoned with him.
Maybe I’m more tied into what’s actually going on than the rest of the media, but I was first informed of the pending Sunday early-afternoon news regarding Groh’s dismissal on Thursday. Read more

House Speaker weighs in
Story by Chris Graham

The Kaine administration is hard at work putting together a proposed two-year budget for state lawmakers to review in the upcoming 2010 General Assembly session.
Anybody see what might be wrong with this picture? The big thing is that Tim Kaine won’t be governor next year, and the man replacing him, Bob McDonnell, has a decidedly different view on budgeting to the Kaine view.
Another big issue: “Many of the people who are putting together the budget in the Kaine administration are leaving. You have to wonder, What’s your motivation if you’re a political appointee, and you’re leaving? You lose in the implementation,” said Chris Saxman, himself a lame duck of sorts after deciding this summer to step down from his 20th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates at the end of his current term in January. They are three men on a mission - seeking to serve up an appetizing smorgasbord of eclectic music that may otherwise not hit the local radio airwaves.
John L. Horst, Ted Grimsrud and Jim Bishop produce and host weekly programs on public radio station WEMC, 91.7 FM. They do it on a volunteer basis because they believe there are sufficient numbers of people hankering for their special brands of music.
And, while they acknowledge that their programs appeal to a “niche market,” they get enthusiastic listener response to shore up their conviction. Read more

During this week, Monday, Nov. 30 through Saturday, Dec. 5, the Waynesboro Exchange Club will be distributing helpful informational brochures on child abuse and free blue light bulbs as part of its Blue Light of Hope Campaign to promote prevention of child abuse.
Unfortunately, child abuse is widespread, affecting children of all ages – from babies only a few months old to teenagers. It happens to both boys and girls, and often results in life-long trauma or death. Tragically, the majority of child abuse occurs in their homes — due to such factors as parental stress, unrealistic expectation of a child, lack of understanding of child development, drug and alcohol abuse, marital difficulties, domestic violence and mental illness. Vision and brain injury

A person who has suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or cerebral vascular accident (CVA) may often experience difficulties with balance, spatial orientation, coordination, cognitive function, and speech. In most cases, a referral for visual consultation only occurs if there’s an injury to an eye or if ocular pathology is suspected. Persons with a TBI or CVA frequently will experience symptoms of double vision, movement of print or stationary objects such as walls and floor, eye strain, visual fatigue, headaches and problems with balance, to name several. Frequently, people will report problems with their vision to rehabilitation professionals and be referred for eye examination. Unfortunately, many will be told that there is nothing wrong with their eye and that it is the effects of their TBI or CVA. Others will be told that their symptoms are not related to their vision.
