Poll: Obama leads potential ’12 GOP foes

A new poll has the seemingly quite politically vulnerable Barack Obama looking OK in a series of hypothetical matchups with possible 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney are at best within hailing distance, down seven and nine points, respectively, in the poll released this morning by Public Policy Polling.

Huckabee trails Obama 48 percent to 41 percent in the PPP poll. A month ago, Obama led Huckabee 47 percent to 41 percent in a PPP national poll.

Romney trails Obama 48 percent to 39 percent in the survey. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is down 53 percent to 38 percent.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush lags behind Obama by a 50 percent-to-37 percent margin.

Huckabee and Palin have the early, early lead among GOP voters thinking way, way ahead to the 2012 Republican nomination contest. Huckabee’s approval rating among Republicans was at 70 percent in the PPP poll, with Palin’s approval rating at 69 percent. Romney had a 50 percent approval rating among Republicans.

“For all the talk of Barack Obama’s faltering popularity, it looks like he’d be re-elected with ease right now,” said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling. “There is no compelling Republican alternative as far as voters are concerned.”
