Attorney-general candidate Steve Shannon on Thursday released his plan to reduce text messaging while driving on Virginia’s roads. Several university studies have found that sending text messages on a cellular phone while driving increases the risk of an accident about as much as driving while intoxicated.
“Texting while driving is a growing problem that poses a serious threat to the safety of our roads in Virginia,” said Shannon. “As attorney general, I will work with the governor, the General Assembly and the Department of Motor Vehicles to act on my plan to toughen penalties for people who put lives at risk by texting while driving.”
Shannon’s texting plan is an addendum to his comprehensive plan to crack down on drunk driving in Virginia, released last month. That plan focused on increased enforcement, tougher penalties and more public education and awareness programs aimed at younger drivers.
Shannon’s plan to reduce text messaging while driving is his fourth policy proposal of the campaign. His opponent, Ken Cuccinelli, has not offered any formal policy proposals, with the exception of signing his name on to gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell’s public safety agenda.
