Reduced greens fees at Wintergreen

This summer Wintergreen Resort has made both its Stoney Creek and Devils Knob courses even more inviting.

For a limited time this summer, Devils Knob is only $69 per player on Monday through Thursday, and just $79 on Friday through Sunday. Stoney Creek, Wintergreen’s popular 27-hole Rees Jones layout, is $59 on weekdays, $69 on Friday through Sunday.

For those interested in bringing a golf group to the resort for an overnight, Wintergreen has a cool summer package for four golfers: a three-bedroom condo is only $119 per player, which covers both lodging and a day’s worth of “unlimited” golf.

Perennially ranked as one of Virginia’s best courses, Devils Knob (elevation 3,850 feet) provides some extra carry on most golf shots, while normal mid-day temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Stoney Creek provides panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a year-round escape for every level of golfer, from serious competitor to vacationing beginner.

UVa. coach to lead women’s throwers on Team USA

Virginia assistant track and field coach Carrie Lane has been selected as the women’s throws coach for Team USA at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Berlin, Germany, from August 15-23.

The 2009 Southeast Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year, Lane led four athletes to All-America honors this spring, including Billie-Jo Grant – the program’s first four-time All-American in a single event. In addition, Grant and senior Caitlin Kelly’s dual honors in the discus marked just the second-time in school history that two Cavaliers earned All-America honors in the same event at a single championship.

Lane, in her fifth season with the Cavaliers, also guided junior Meghan Briggs to her first national honor in the javelin and saw Yemi Ayeni wrap up his career as one of the most decorated male athletes at Virginia. The program’s first three-time male All-American in a single event, Ayeni recently became UVa’s first-ever NCAA East Region Champion, winning the 2009 discus title for his fourth all-region honor in the event.

At last season’s ACC Outdoor Championships, Lane led her throwers to two individual ACC titles and five all-conference performances. Her women scored at least one point in each of the throwing events for a combined 41 points at the meet.
