I am curious about something. Why would Augusta County approve so many subdivisions to be built when most of the elementary schools in the area are at capasity or over? We all know it’s for the money. But is the increase in money going to pay for expanding schools and building new schools to provide for the influx in children? Not to mention the increased demand in county agencies.
Wilson Elementary School’s septic has been an issue for years but by all means let’s build Teaverton II, Wyndham Hills and Emerald Hills subdivisions! When the absolute maximum number of students was reached at WES, the children from Wyndham Hills and Emerald Hills were bused to Hugh K Cassell. Did I mention the 2 or 3 subdivisions that have gone into Crimora in the past 5 years? Thus overcrowding HKC and causing children who live within 2 miles of HKC to have their bus trips doubled to go to Ladd Elementary! I can’t understand where the children are considered in this at all. Parents (tax payers) buy houses in areas near schools they want their children to attend and that’s why it’s listed with the house. But that doesn’t mean a thing when subdivisions keep going up in areas that already have over crowded elementary schools.
See if this sound familiar?
“I would be happy to take your ….developement / investment….. money but please don’t expect to get any return …..expanded or new schools / retirement money…… on it because we are going to use the money how we see fit.” One set of words caused our economy to crash and you can guess what the other set of words works well for.
Thanks for listening.
Good points, all. Residential developments need to be considered in the context of the demands that are placed on schools, roads, water/sewer, etc. I’d agree with you, Sharon, that it doesn’t seem that these considerations are always at the forefront among county leaders. We seem content with letting the developers do their thing.
It’s not the devolopers Fault that the county does’nt have the foresight to build schools that are above needed capacity. It seems like they build schools that are for the needed population at the time and not for 10 to 15 years into the future.
Someone needs to come up with cheaper school construction methods because this seems to be a issue all over the nation.Schools should also be built to where Additions are easier to build-on.
Harriston East and the area surrounding it is zoned Medium density residential on the augusta county comprehension plan.Harriston includes more houses then the Vesper View,Northwood, and Lynnhaven subdivisions in Crimora.Vesper View has another phase that has yet to be started that extends behind the Powerline in Crimora. So the recent subdivions in Crimora are do not cover as much acreage as the future harriston subdivisions.
