The Rumor Mill Says …
- That Reo Hatfield is going to run for City Council.
- That Cory Alexander is going back to the UVa. bench.
- That a local paper is going online-only.
- That Reo Hatfield is going to run for City Council. I’ve heard this from several sources over the past 10 days. Hatfield is a two-time City Council member and two-time City Council loser, most recently in 2006 when he lost to Lorie Smith, against whom he is reportedly considering running again.
A political strategist couldn’t ask for an easier – or if you’re working for Hatfield, harder – job. Hatfield’s myriad personal issues and romantic dalliances have not been battle-tested despite his four runs for City Council and his one (aborted) run for sheriff. But that was in the old days of Waynesboro politics. The ’08 elections were made personal by the win-at-all-costs conservatives. Well, guess what? Two sides can play that game. Get ready for the pitched battle of all pitched battles.
- That Cory Alexander is going back to the UVa. bench. That’s what I’m hearing in the wake of the press conference at JPJ announcing Tony Bennett as the new men’s basketball coach. Alexander, a Waynesboro native, former UVa. star, former NBA player and (for now) current color commentator on UVa. basketball radio broadcasts, is reportedly interested in making a move from the announcer’s table to the coaching staff, and tonight Marty Hudtloff on NBC-29 talked up how Bennett is looking to fill out his staff with someone with ties to the state of Virginia.
I’m also hearing the name of one of Alexander’s teammates from his UVa. playing days, Jason Williford, who is currently on the staff at American University under former UVa. coach Jeff Jones, as a possibility for the new Bennett staff.
Williford, if I remember correctly, was talked about as a possible addition to the staff back when Dave Leitao took the UVa. job in 2005.
- That a local paper is going online-only. There has been speculation on the local blogosphere of just that. Nobody I’m talking with these days among the insiders is saying anything about that to me, but the moves this week (a newsroom employee laid off at the News Virginian, the move by the News Leader to outsource its printing operations) weren’t chattered about ahead of time, either.

Supporting Nancy again no surprise there. Are you going to try and run once again? Maybe this time you wont get so scared when someone calls the News Virginian about your past employment….
Oh I forgot to add Cory Alexander he’s nothing in this town. You mention his name to people in this town and most will be like who? The man has not done one thing to help his city or the local YMCA which his jersey still hangs and where he learned all his basketball skills. Congrats if he gets to go work on the UVA basketball staff but I hope he doesn’t teach the kids his selfishness and how not to give back to a community.
Scared? Interesting observation, “Fred.” I left the NV with seven Virginia Press Association awards for journalism excellence and an otherwise stellar work record. I had a lot to be scared about there. The boys had somebody call there several times trying to dig up dirt, and obviously didn’t come up with any.
Keep pushing my buttons, “Fred,” not your real name. Lots of skeletons in lots of closets. I’m just itching for an excuse to start opening the doors.
One other note, “Fred.” Mr. Hatfield and I traded several e-mails this week, and the tone of the messages from him was pleasant and above board. The general theme seemed to be, “Let’s keep the focus on politics and not on personal issues.”
Knowing your real identity as I do, I have to wonder why you’d threaten me here as you guys did back last summer when you tried to dig up dirt and had no luck.
I was thisclose to wanting to believe Mr. Hatfield for being sincere in wanting to keep things above board. Thanks for the dose of reality.
No skeletons in my closet, but will my fathers ashes do (they’re in there right now).
My IP address gives you that Ntelos is my server – so LOTS of people have Ntelos as a server. Computer geeks tend to know this stuff.
If you really know my identity give me a call and I’ll even buy lunch!
Computer geeks tend to know also that IP addresses give away other parts of your identity as well.
It’s not rocket science, “Fred.”
I use sitemeter, which tells you what a reader had for dinner. (that will mess with the black helicopter crowd).
In the past two weeks, I’ve gotten four hits from Hanoi, Vietnam. Never thought my writing would be seen that far away.
A fun and easy way for me to track who’s who is to …
- Look at the specific IP address provided to me in the admin file on augustafreepress.com.
- Compare that to IP addresses in my e-mail files. Computer geeks know that every time you send an e-mail, your unique IP address is encoded in the routing done from your Internet provider’s e-mail server.
The gist of it is if you’ve ever sent an e-mail to, oh, I don’t know, my freepress2@ntelos.net account, and I happen to still have it on file, all I’d have to do is check the IP address in the coding in your e-mail against the IP address that was included in your message on the AFP site, and voila, I know who you are, with reasonable certainty.
Wonder if I’d be sharing all of this if I didn’t have a notion as to what the answer might be in our “Fred” case …
I dunno.
Considering I’ve never ever sent you an email (to ANY email address) you have nothing to compare my IP address to.
Wrong.
