She went down to the business to tell this person that she couldn’t work the shift? First of all, why didn’t she tell her when she was first asked? Second, if she couldn’t tell her right away, why didn’t she simply call?

I have worked in businesses like this that employs young people and this whole story sounds a bit off to me.

I just don’t think this type of situation can ever be prevented in the future. While we as humans have basic compassion for others, the bottom line is that we will always look out for ourselves and our loved ones first before thinking about what is “fair” and what is the “right thing to do.” This is one case of many in the past and surely of the future.
