Local events marking Obama inauguration Tuesday

It won’t quite be like being in Washington, but that’s only because you’ll actually be able to see what’s going on. That’s what locals will be thinking tomorrow as they mark the inauguration of Barack Obama at events across the Valley and Central Virginia.

The Augusta Free Press is cosponsoring the event in its hometown in Waynesboro at the new Residence Inn by Marriott on Windigrove Lane. The 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. event, cosponsored by the Waynesboro Democratic Committee, is free and open to the public and includes a catered lunch and refreshments and two big-screen TVs.

Other local events on the schedule include:

- The Democratic Party committees in Staunton and Augusta are hosting a watch party on Inauguration Day at Blue Mountain Coffee in Downtown Staunton. That event begins at 11:30 a.m. and will feature a big-screen TV and cash coffee bar and food.

- Mary Baldwin College in Staunton is hosting an inauguration event at 11:15 a.m. in Francis Auditorium on the campus of MBC. The event is free and open to the public and will feature a panel discussion following the swearing-in and Inaugural Address.

- Bridgewater College will make available to the public a big-screen, televised viewing of the inauguration from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Cole Hall Auditorium. Cole Hall is located on East College Street in Bridgewater. A public viewing will also be available in the Eagle’s Nest café, located on the ground floor of the Cole Hall building. Parking is available in the main lot behind the building.

- Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg is hosting watch parties at Common Grounds, the Campus Center Greeting Hall, Lehman Auditorium, Science Center 106 and Royals Den.

- The University of Virginia will host a public viewing of the inauguration at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. Doors open at 10:30 a.m.

Two evening events are also planned. The Staunton and Augusta Democratic Party committees are cohosting a Yes, We Did! Inauguration Celebration the night of Tuesday, Jan. 20, from 7-11 p.m. at White Star Tavern in Staunton. Tickets for that event are $5. An RSVP is required at twlong@northriver.coop or crobertdickerman@earthlink.net. The Harrisonburg Democratic Committee is hosting an inaugural party at Clementine’s in Downtown Harrisonburg. The cost is $30. RSVP to info@hburgdems.com.
