Wonder how many of the nice folks you run into are fellow Come-Heres. Interesting perspective, Keith. I'm hoping to hear from more Come-Heres and From-Heres to get insight into what I've been observing, and this gets us started!

Interesting piece, Chris - and something that definitely strikes a chord with me. For those that don't know me...I am a "come here." One of those left coast Hollywood types the GOP is always talking about. Anyway, here's my two cents. I have met some wonderful people here in the Old Dominion - but I have to admit, after living in the Valley for five years - I still feel like at outsider. Where is all the southern hospitality? Why do so many people give me the once-over in line at the post office as if I am up to some mischief? Is it my clothes (fierce) or the way I talk? Is it the fact that I don't mind telling people what I think? Is it that I tend to get right to the point? Honestly, I have felt more welcome getting on the freeway in LA during rush hour - more warmth in a NY city subway car.
There are things about Virginia that I certainly love and I have not been snubbed by everyone - so I am guessing that the "from here/come here" dichotomy may be somewhat more complex. Still I can't get over the ever-present feeling that I do not belong. Where is Melanie Wilkes when you need her??
