Former Fishburne teacher, coach passes in North Carolina

Lt. Col. Lonnie Sasser Smith (Ret.), 72, died Tuesday morning (April 22, 2008) at Sun Bridge in Mount Olive, N.C.
He was the son of the late Mary Sasser Early.
Lt. Col. Smith was retired from the U.S. Army, having served in Korea and Vietnam, where he received many commendations and medals.
He was a graduate of Murfreesboro High School, Wake Forest University, and Old Dominion University, with a masters degree in mathematics.
After retirement, he taught math and coached tennis and cross country at Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, N.C., with the Rev Frank Purvis officiating.
Lt. Col Smith is survived by five cousins, Ray Brogden, Garnell Brogden, Dannie Harrell, Kaye Harrell and Tim Harrell, all of Grantham, N.C.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Lonnie Sasser of Murfreesboro, N.C., and a special aunt, Addie Sasser Brogden of Grantham, N.C.
