Hokies get much-needed rest before UNC

After suffering back-to-back losses, Virginia Tech basketball coach Seth Greenberg is only going to complain so much about a few days off.
Well, there is something that Greenberg could complain about.
“It’d be a great time to have a week off if we didn’t have to play Carolina at the end of the week off,” said Greenberg, whose Hokies (14-10, 5-5 ACC) travel to North Carolina on Saturday.
Even with the, ahem, reward at the end, Tech could definitely use the time off – after falling on the road at North Carolina State 73-63 on Feb. 5 and then losing a tough one at home to Miami by a 74-71 count over the weekend.
The losses – on the heels of a hot 5-3 start in ACC play – have ratcheted up the pressure on Greenberg and his team, who are on the road again on Feb. 20 at Maryland.
“This is the stretch run,” Greenberg said in his weekly teleconference yesterday. “We’re back to push, we’re back to even, and that’s disappointing. And everyone wants to make a big deal – well, you’re 5-5, and you’ve got two in a row on the road. Well, that’s just the way it is – and then we’ve got three in a row at home. So our goal obviously is to try to steal a game on the road and find a way to win your home games.”
The week off will help the Hokies regain their focus, according to their coach.
“I think it’s good for our team,” Greenberg said. “We’ve got to refocus on who we are. Having such a young team, I think it’s good that we can give the kids two days off to take a deep breath and kind of get focused academically and then get back with a little bit of enthusiasm on Tuesday.
“It’s coming at a good time, because we are a good basketball team, and I think maybe this gives us a chance to kind of get our feet back,” Greenberg said.
