uva uclaUCLA head coach Jim Mora has named true freshman Josh Rosen his starting quarterback for the 13th-ranked Bruins’ Sept. 5 season opener with Virginia.

Rosen, a 6’4”, 210-pounder, was a five-star recruit ranked the #1 quarterback in the Class of 2015 by Rivals.com, who also had Rosen the #2 recruit in the class overall.

“When you have done it as long as we have done it, at some point it just becomes apparent to you. You get a gut feeling. You have seen enough and you say, You know what? It’s time to make that decision, and let’s go. And that’s what we did,” Mora told reporters.

Rosen beat out junior Jerry Neuheisel, who had been the backup to long-time starter Brett Hundley for two seasons.

UVA head coach Mike London was asked about the move on a conference call with reporters on Thursday.

“Obviously they know something that we don’t know in terms of the young man’s ability and how he can run their offense,” London said. “It may be that he doesn’t want the young man to be thinking about things before they go into game-prep week. I’m quite sure that our guys will also try to find ways to deal with a guy that is starting his first game and deal with that appropriately.”
